The healthcare industry is booming right now and it’s expected to keep on growing over the next few years. According to government sources, healthcare spending in the U.S. is projected to grow to $4.1 trillion within the next six years and will account for over 20% of the Gross Domestic Product (GPD). As a result of this, the medical industry will also create over 3 million new jobs by 2020 so it’s a great time to jump on the bandwagon.
Some of the most lucrative jobs in the healthcare industry are in Medical Sales. A Medical Sales Representative is someone who promotes medical supplies, equipment, and even prescription drugs to an array of clinical professionals such as nurses, physicians, general practitioners, and medical school administrators. As with any sales job, it’s important that you know a lot about the industry, the products, and competition, and about who you are dealing with as a client.
In general, as a Medical Sales Rep you will be responsible for scheduling appointments with clinical professionals, conducting product presentations, and following up with clients to help ensure repeat and referral business. Depending on what you’re selling, you could be speaking with a variety of different people. If you’re selling general supplies to smaller offices, you may be dealing with an office manager or medical assistant. If you’re selling large x-ray machines, you may be dealing with hospital executives and board members.
When applying for a job and writing a Medical Sales Resume, it’s important to address these specifics and talk about who you have sold to in the past (provided you have medical sales experience). Your resume must reflect your ability to communicate effectively with these sorts of individuals and ultimately sell them on the product. And it doesn’t hurt to have an established network of healthcare professionals to call upon instead of starting in a sales territory from scratch. If you have that kind of a network, be sure to mention it.
Other than that, a Medical Sales Resume will be much like a sales resume for any industry insofar as you have to talk about your specific accomplishments. For instance, break out some statistics if you can. Did you meet or exceed your previous sales quotas? If so, was it by 110%? Or 210%? These are important numbers that hiring managers will often refer to in order to get a sense of your previous sales achievements.
If you are just now trying to secure your first job in the field of medical sales, I would still recommend talking in depth about your previous sales experience, regardless of the industry. A good sales person can often transfer their skills across industries and hiring managers know that, so don’t be discouraged if your background isn’t 100% relevant. You can still show value by adding sales statistics in there and speaking more generally about your customer service and follow up skills.
